Bosnian High Representative Joins Srebrenica March :: Balkan Insight

According to the Office of the High representative, OHR, this is Inzko?s homage to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, which he described as ?the worst post-World War II atrocity committed in Europe?.

Before joining the Peace March, Inzko said that individuals are making their own personal journey of commemoration in order to share the burden of memory with the families of victims.

?Every single step made on the way to Srebrenica sends a clear message that we will not allow those who lost their lives to be forgotten, the memory of what happened to be twisted or this terrible crime to be repeated. The Peace March carries a simple message, understandable to every human being: peace and justice will prevail over evil,? said Inzko.

The High Representative is joining the Peace March together with thousands of others to show respect for the dead and solidarity with the relatives.

The March will end on July 11 in Potocari where the remains of 520 victims will be buried.

Inzko said that it is his deepest wish that justice is served and that those responsible for the genocide in Srebrenica are convicted.

On Sunday, July 8, more than 7,000 people set off for a three day, 110 kilometre-long march to Srebrenica?s Potocari memorial centre.?

Part of the ?Mars Mira?, or ?Peace March,? the walkers are tracing a reverse path of an estimated 15,000 thousand men and boys who fled the formerly protected United Nations enclave when it fell to the Bosnian Serb army on July 12, 1995.?

The march began in the village of Nezuk, the place closest to Srebrenica held by the Bosnian Army.?
