A portion of the event?s proceeds will go to Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade to support its positive programs for area children who need them the most. The Inaugural Burger, Beer & Balls Bash will will feature over 25 local restaurants sampling burgers and meatballs, unlimited craft beer samples with the purchase of a VIP ticket, a demo on how to build a unique burger, a burger eating contest by B&B Burger & Beer Joint at 7 p.m. (teams can apply for the contest at the Mary Brickell Village location), live all-day concert, wine & spirits VIP lounge, Miami Marlins free kids play area including arts and crafts, car exhibit, exhibitors and vendors, and charitable organizations. Roasted Tomato Pasta with White Wine Sauce ? Eat Healthy Be ...

I know, another pasta dish within the week. We?ve been on a bit of a budget at my house and whole wheat pasta is both inexpensive and filling. It has the added bonus of making enough for leftovers to take with me for lunch the next day. Anyway, I mentioned before that I?m not a fan of raw tomatoes, but we got these little beauties in our CSA box not too long ago.

Aren?t they beautiful? If I did like raw tomatoes, I would have eaten these cute little guys like grapes. But, alas.

So my absolute favorite thing to do with tomatoes is do a slow roast. I first saw this on Pinch My Salt, where she did a slow roast of some tomatoes. It results in something similar to sun dried tomatoes, but they still have a bit of a juicy bite left in them. Mmmm, delicious. I?ve roasted them at different temperatures; 300, 325, 350. All with similar results, mostly the length of time taken to get them cooked to the point I like changes. They tend to be juicier when cooked at a higher temperature, though because they spend less time in the oven. It is a bit of a time investment to do this, but I never mind. They?re like eating candy afterwards and I could easily polish off a whole pint by myself.

For a quick meal, roast the tomatoes the night before and stick ?em in the frigde. Heat them through in the sauce before adding the pasta.

I made this dish with Gruyere cheese because I had some in my fridge that needed to be used up. But, the dish was missing a bit of that umph, so I would definitely use some grated parmesan in its place next time for the salty bite that it adds.

Roasted Tomato Pasta with White Wine Sauce

Ingredients:
1 lb whole wheat pasta
1 pint of tomatoes, halved
1/2 c. fresh basil, Chiffonade (it?s really easy, just pick the leaves, stack them, roll them, and cut them into slices)
2 c. fresh baby spinach
1/2 c. grated gruyere or parmesan cheese
White Wine Sauce
Olive oil
Salt and Pepper to taste

Sauce:
2 c. white wine
1 c. chicken or vegetable broth
1/2 onion, chopped
2 cloves of garlic, minced
2 bay leaves
Salt and Pepper to taste

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 325. Roast the tomatoes. Halve all of those little guys, give them a good drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. You can also add some dried herbs here if you?d like. Try Italian seasoning, oregano, basil, or marjoram. Roast for about 60 to 90 minutes, or until slightly shriveled and delicious.

When the tomatoes are done, put water on to boil for the pasta in a large pot. In a large skillet, heat a drizzle of olive oil over medium heat. Cook the onions and garlic until the onions are translucent. Add the white wine to the pan and bring to a simmer. Add the bay leaves and allow to reduce for about 5 minutes. Add the chicken broth and salt and pepper to taste. Turn to low and allow the sauce to simmer while the pasta cooks.

Cook the pasta to al dente and reserve about 1 c. of the cooking liquid (You can use this liquid if you don?t think there?s quite enough sauce. I also add a little bit of it in with my leftovers so the pasta doesn?t get dry when it?s reheated). Remove the bay leaves from the sauce. Drain the pasta and add it to the pan with the sauce along with the basil, tomatoes, cheese, and spinach. Fold everything together and allow it to hang out for a minute or two on the stove.

Serve with a little bit of cheese grated over the top and with some additional basil. Enjoy!

Did shooting suspect send plans to doctor?

AURORA, Colo. (Reuters) - The man accused of Friday's movie theater massacre in Colorado mailed a notebook "full of details about how he was going to kill people" to a University of Colorado psychiatrist before the attack, FoxNews.com reported on Wednesday.

The package allegedly from the suspected shooter, 24-year-old James Eagan Holmes, remained unopened in a mailroom for as long as a week before its discovery Monday, FoxNews.com reported, citing a law enforcement source.

Reuters could not immediately verify the report but was seeking to do so. Messages left with police in Aurora and other law enforcement officials involved in the case were not immediately returned.

The FoxNews.com report said Police and FBI agents were called to the University of Colorado Anschutz medical campus in Aurora on Monday morning after the psychiatrist, who is also a professor at the school, reported receiving a package believed to be from the suspect.

Although that package turned out to be from someone else and harmless, a search of the Campus Services' mailroom turned up another package sent to the psychiatrist with Holmes' name in the return address, the source told FoxNews.com.

After obtaining a search warrant, police took the package away and discovered its contents.

FoxNews.com quoted its source saying: "Inside the package was a notebook full of details about how he was going to kill people. There were drawings of what he was going to do in it - drawings and illustrations of the massacre."

Police say Holmes, wearing body armor, a gas mask and toting three firearms, opened fire on a crowded midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in the Denver suburb of Aurora, killing 12 people and wounding 58 others.

Holmes, who was arrested immediately after the attack outside the theater, made his first appearance in court on Monday. Authorities plan to formally charge him on July 30.

Sally Ride, first American woman in space, dies at 61 (updated)

It's a sad day for space travel. Sally Ride, the first American woman to ever travel to space, has died at the age of 61 after a bout with pancreatic cancer. She's best known for breaking NASA's gender barrier by flying on Space Shuttle Challenger on June 18th, 1983, but she spent much more of her time guiding our future in space while here on Earth -- she founded NASA's Office of Exploration and directed its early strategy, and she later went on to lead the California Space Institute as well as teach physics at the University of California in San Diego. Her final decade saw her establish Sally Ride Science to encourage students wanting to follow in her footsteps, especially girls. Ride blazed one of the brighter trails in technology, and she'll be missed.

Update: Ride is survived by her same-sex partner of 27 years, Dr. Tam O'Shaughnessy.

Kids camp out in hospital as La Cueva teens recover | KRQE.com ...

Support continues to pour in for the two La Cueva high school cheerleaders who were badly hurt in a car crash Monday night.

Family members say Lilly Pickard and Jessica Sanchez are showing improvement everyday, but still have a long road ahead.

The 16-year-old girls were ejected from their SUV when it rolled on Paseo del Norte and Tramway. Neither girl was wearing a seat belt.

Lilly?s dad sent this picture of some La Cueva kids camped out at UNM Hospital in support of their classmates.

Philip Pickard says kids have been showing up at the hospital, setting up prayer meetings and a donation website.

A prayer vigil is set for the girls Sunday at 8 p.m. on the La Cueva High School soccer field.

Apple, Facebook will lead news this week

NEW YORK -- The trend of better-than-expected earnings will be put to the test in the coming week when investors hope Apple can exceed already high expectations for the tech giant and Facebook reports its first quarterly earnings.

Apple accounts for a significant proportion of the overall earnings of Standard & Poor's 500 components. S&P 500 earnings are expected to show a rise of 5.7 percent in the second quarter from a year ago. Excluding the maker of the iPad, the rise is 4.8 percent, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Apple's results, due Tuesday, could help stocks build on this week's gains and counter investor worries over the euro zone crisis. More signs of financial stress in Spain on Friday caused stocks to give back some of the week's increase. The S&P 500 ended 0.4 percent higher for the week.

"Apple can drive the whole (tech) group," said Daniel Morgan, who helps manage about $3.5 billion at Synovus Trust Company in Atlanta.

"There's a huge psychological component as it relates directly to Apple. If they just blast numbers like they did last quarter, then obviously the perception will be everybody else did pretty good and Apple did fabulous."

Apple's expected strong performance is mainly why technology earnings growth has held up better than other S&P 500 sectors. The expected growth rate for the sector has gone from 6.9 percent in April to 8.7 percent as of Friday, the data showed.

Apple's earnings for the quarter are seen at $10.38 a share, based on Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S, which includes estimates from 43 analysts. That compares with a profit of $7.79 a share for the year-ago quarter.

Morgan said Apple's growth has largely depended on the success of its new products. "For the stock, to continue its trajectory at the pace it has, it's critical that they release these new products," he said. Apple's shares are up 49.2 percent for the year so far.

Apple does not give any clues on its future products, but the California company is widely expected to release its next-generation iPhone later this year. Wall Street has also set its heart on Apple launching a new "mini iPad" and the long-awaited television set in the near future.

Investors are likely to be just as keen to hear from Facebook when it reports on Thursday. Facebook's first results following its market debut could give investors another chance to indicate how they feel about the stock since its disappointing initial public offering.

Shares of Facebook, one of the most closely watched IPOs ever, lost ground after technical problems with its market debut on Nasdaq and as investors questioned its ability to rapidly increase advertising revenue.

Analysts said an earnings miss by Facebook could be disastrous for the stock, which closed Friday at $28.76, below its $38 offering price.

Investors are looking for executives to address a litany of concerns about the business, such as the efficacy of its online ads and the company's nascent efforts in mobile advertising.

Tech results also will be closely watched for signs of weak demand overseas, particularly from Europe. Other technology companies expected to report next week include Texas Instruments and Amazon.com . Of the S&P sectors, technology has the highest sales exposure to Europe at about 25 percent, according to a Bank of America/Merrill Lynch research note.

Among the other 138 S&P 500 companies reporting earnings are Ford Motor Co , United Parcel Service and Whirlpool Corp .

While the majority of companies have beaten earnings expectations, revenue performance has been the worst for S&P 500 companies since the first quarter of 2009.

With results in from 116 companies, just 43 percent of companies are beating revenue expectations.

Sixty-seven percent of companies are beating earnings estimates, compared with a long-term average of 62 percent, Thomson Reuters data showed.

"With global growth slowing down, it's not surprising we're going to see some mixed numbers on the revenue side," said Natalie Trunow, chief investment officer of equities at Calvert Investment Management in Bethesda, Maryland, whose firm manages about $13 billion in assets.

While earnings are expected to dominate stock investors' attention in the coming week, the euro zone crisis is still capable of taking the spotlight.

"It's the default thing for people to focus on," said Eric Kuby, chief investment officer at North Star Investment Management Corp. in Chicago.

Spain will tap the markets Tuesday when it sells three- and six-month bills. It will also sell three- and five-year bonds on August 2. Spain's 10-year bond yields hit a euro-era high of 7.3 percent on Friday.

The week's U.S. economic data includes the Markit U.S. Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index for July, due on Tuesday. June's reading marked the lowest showing since December 2010.?

Epson Expression Home XP-400 Small-in-One Printer

The Epson Expression Home XP-400 Small-in-One ($99 list) is essentially an upgrade to the Epson Stylus NX430 Small-in-One ($99 direct, 3.5 stars), the first of Epson's multifunction printers (MFPs) to bear the Small-in-One moniker. It retains its highly compact form factor while showing improved speed.

The XP-400's defining characteristic is its diminutive frame; it measures 5.4 by 15.4 by 11.8 inches (HWD) when closed and weighs just 9 pounds. The glossy black XP-400 has a top-loading paper feeder that fits 100 sheets. Although it lacks an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper, it offers guidance for manual duplexing through the printer driver. The printer employs four individual ink tanks.

The XP-400 prints, copies, and scans. The tilt-up control panel houses a 2.5-inch LCD screen. The Home screen shows various labeled icons, which you can access with a 4-way controller: Setup; Help; WiFi Setup; Copy; Print Photos; Scan; and More Functions (under which are Copy/Restore Photos; Photo Layout Sheet; and Slide Show). The flatbed scanner can scan or copy at up to letter size, and lacks an automatic document feeder (ADF). A memory-card reader accepts cards in the SD/MSpro families.

The XP-400 connects to a computer via USB, or to a network by 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. I tested it over a USB connection with a PC running Windows Vista.

Speed

It was good to see the XP-400 print out our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software) at a respectable 3.1 effective pages per minute (ppm), as the Epson Stylus NX430 Small-in-One's 1.7 ppm had been notably slow even for a budget inkjet when I tested it last October. In general we've seen an uptick in inkjet speeds over the past year, but even so, this was a nice jump, putting it in the middle of the pack for its price point. The Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J430W ?($99 direct, 4 stars) zipped through the same tests at 4.3 ppm, while the Editors' Choice Kodak ESP 3.2 All-in-One Printer ($99.99 direct, 4 stars) output our tests at a 3.2 ppm clip.

The XP-400's average of 2 minutes 18 seconds to print out a 4-by-6 photo was an improvement over the NX430's 2:55 average, although still slow; the Kodak ESP 3.2's average of 50 seconds per print leaves them, as well as the Brother MFC-J430W?which averaged 1:55 per print?in the dust.

Output Quality
The XP-400's text quality was slightly below par for an inkjet, fine for most home, school, or business correspondence but not for resumes or other documents with which you want to create a good visual impression.

Graphics quality was par for an inkjet good enough for any internal business, home, or school use. Depending on how picky you are, you might even consider the graphics good enough to hand to important clients or customers who you want to impress with a sense of your professionalism.

Photo quality was typical an inkjet. For the most part, colors looked reasonably true, though prints tended to be on the light side, with some detail lost in brighter areas. A monochrome photo showed a distinct tint. Quality was about what you'd expect from prints from a drugstore.

The XP-400 is sharply geared to home use, lacking features that would make it attractive for even light-duty home-office use. Its paper capacity is at the low end of the acceptable range, and it lacks fax capabilities, an automatic document feeder (ADF), an auto-duplexer, and a port for a USB thumb drive, to name a few.

Epson doesn?t quote cost-per-page figures for its printers, but based on the price and yield figures of their most cost-effective cartridges, the running costs work out to 6 cents per monochrome page and 16.7 cents per color page. Both are high compared with the more economical models; the Kodak ESP 3.2's running costs are 3 cents per monochrome page and 9.5 cents per color page, and the Brother MFC-J430W's are 3.8 and 11.3 cents, respectively.

The Epson Expression Home XP-400 Small-in-One is a fairly typical budget home MFP, with fairly average speed, graphics and photo quality, and feature set, and with a relatively high cost per page. Its compactness is the one thing that sets it apart. The Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J430W is significantly faster in printing out documents, while the Editors' Choice Kodak ESP 3.2 has better overall output quality and photo-printing speed. But neither can fit in as tight a space as the XP-400.?

Here's a guide to some key questions in the wake of the mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater during a showing of "The Dark Knight Rises."

Q: WHAT HAPPENED?

A: Shortly after midnight Friday, a former graduate student wearing a gas mask set off a gas canister and fired into a crowded theater in the Denver suburb of Aurora, Colo., killing 12 people and injuring nearly 60 others, authorities said. The suspect was taken into custody and identified by federal law enforcement officials as 24-year-old James Holmes. Authorities did not release a motive. The FBI said there was no indication of ties to any terrorist groups.

Q: WHO IS THE SUSPECT?

A: Holmes was studying neuroscience in a Ph.D. program at the University of Colorado-Denver. He enrolled in the program in June 2011 and was in the process of withdrawing, though it wasn't immediately clear why he was leaving.

Holmes graduated from high school in the San Diego area. Police in San Diego read a statement from family members in which they said their hearts go out to those involved. The family said they're cooperating with authorities in San Diego and Aurora, and are trying to process everything.

Tom Mai, a man who lives next door to the family, described Holmes as a loner and said the mother told him Holmes couldn't find a job after earning a master's degree from a public university in California.

Q: WHAT IS GOING ON AT HOLMES' APARTMENT?

A: Police said the third-floor apartment was booby trapped, so they've evacuated five surrounding buildings and bomb technicians were determining how to disarm flammable or explosive material.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said pictures from inside the apartment are fairly disturbing and the devices look to be sophisticated.

The apartment is about four miles from the theater.

Q: ARE MOVIE THEATERS STILL SHOWING THE FILM?

A: Yes, though theaters and police increased security. Some fans were nervous about going to see the film, but many others were undeterred by the tragedy.

Two police officers were stationed outside the AMC theater in New York's Times Square, which had showings beginning every 20 minutes Friday. Later in the day, the officers gave way to a police cruiser that was parked out front with an officer in it. At the Regal Gallery Place multiplex in downtown Washington, theater employees searched patrons' bags and purses while taking their tickets.

Q: WHO WAS HURT IN THE THEATER?

A: Many victims treated at hospitals were under 40, including a 4-month-old baby and 6-year-old. The oldest reported patient was 45.

Victims were treated for chemical exposure, apparently related to canisters thrown by the gunman, and gunshot and shrapnel wounds.

The Pentagon said some members of the military were either killed or wounded in the shooting, though it wasn't clear exactly how many.

Q: WAS THERE ANY LINK BETWEEN THE SHOOTING AND MOVIE'S PLOT?

A: It's unclear. In "The Dark Knight Rises," a masked villain leads a murderous crew into a packed football stadium and wages an attack involving guns and explosives. But violent attacks on the public by villains are key components of most superhero movies.

There are general parallels to the shooting, "The Dark Knight" and the comic book character. Bruce Wayne's drive to become Batman arose from witnessing the deaths of his parents at the hands of small-time criminal who shot and killed them after they had left a movie theater. The Batman video game called "Arkham City" takes place in an abandoned movie theatre, and in the third issue of DC Comics' "Batman: The Dark Knight," a gritty retooling of the Batman character, the Joker kills an entire late-night TV audience with gas.

Q: WHEN WAS THE LAST MASS SHOOTING IN THE U.S.?

COLUMBUS, Ohio --

A Central Ohio woman is bucking trends, and her work impacts your life every day.

When you shop at DSW or pull an item off the shelf at Wal-mart, Michelle Kerr's company helped make it possible.

She's the founder and CEO of Oxford Consulting, and her company's IT systems connect customers and suppliers, making businesses efficient.

"As a consumer, I go into Wal-mart and I buy Kraft macaroni and cheese. We are sending that signal back to Kraft to say, 'Oh, by the way, we sold this much at these stores. You need to produce more.' And so Kraft then tells their suppliers, 'I need more macaroni. I need more cheese sauce. I need more boxes.'" Kerr said. "So all of that connectivity and optimizing that connectivity is really what we're doing."

It's almost like translating language, making one computer system talk to and understand another.

Oxford also offers IT start-up and IT support to small businesses.

Kerr was only 24 years old when she started Oxford at her kitchen table. She now operates a $17 million a year global operation. Her parents immigrated to Columbus from South Africa when she was a child, leaving everything behind to come to America and start a business.

"I had grown up around that entrepreneurial spirit, and I think so much of my passion and determination comes from wanting to make sure that I was leveraging that opportunity that I was given by coming from this country," she said.

Kerr said that Central Ohio is a great place to start a business, because women here support each other. But, she said, it wasn't always easy to connect.

"Most women have a good social network, but they don't have a good business network," said Melanie Martin Jones, founder of the Women's Council of Central Ohio.

Jones, an attorney, started the council to connect representatives of more than 50 area women's organizations.

"In my practice, which is intellectual property, I would have a client come to me and say, 'I need somebody to do IT. I need somebody for a CFO.' My network was all men. I didn't know any women," she said.

Jones is also now president of the local chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO).

When NAWBO started in 1997, 24 percent of local businesses were women-owned. That number is now 30 percent.

"At least it's growth and that's good, especially in this economy," Jones said.

Business owners like Kerr are part of the growing network of Central Ohio women who are helping other women succeed.

"We are nurturers. We genuinely like to see each other be successful. It's not as cut throat and competitive. We're happy for each other," Kerr said.

Restaurant review: Sasa ? life, from the ground up.

It?s been awhile since we?ve been out, so we took advantage of my recent birthday as an excuse to offload C for a couple hours and go enjoy a dinner. So off we went, once again back to Shaker Square, this time to Sasa, a Japanese Izakaya?Asian bistro. Izakaya?refers to a type of drinking establishment that serves food as well, a casual bar/pub type place. Sasa bills itself as serving ?tapas-style dishes,? and we certainly found that to be the case. We also came on a Monday, which meant all-night happy-hour pricing, so $5 per small dish (the menu is set up with small, medium, and large dishes).

Since the size of the plates was smaller, we had many different things, so I won?t describe each one in detail ? I?ll just let the pictures do the talking. Suffice it to say, the food was all outstanding, though in our case, very seafood-heavy (being Japanese; there are also many non-seafood menu items if fish isn?t your thing). Part of the reason we came here was I?ve been craving sushi. I?m not totally sure why, because I?ve only had it a couple times?and I tend to like my food cooked, but nevertheless, I wanted some, and Sasa didn?t disappoint with the Spicy Dynamite, a combo of salmon, tuna, and whitefish, wrapped?and deep-fried just long enough to crisp up the outside, but still leave the inside raw. Quite amazing.

Lobster and shrimp harumaki ? egg-roll style dish, with a nice, sweet, dipping sauce.

SASA fries ? crispy outside, soft inside, sprinkled with two types of seaweed, and alongside a Japanese-style barbecue sauce, and a creamy, spicy dip.

Tuna sashimi

Fried oyster served in their shells atop napa cabbage slaw.

Shrimp yakiudon ? served over udon noodles and vegetables in a spicy peanut sauce.

The Spicy Dynamite roll.

And for dessert, a plum-wine poached pear.

Japanese cream soda, with a marble in the bottle.

The verdict: Sasa gets six stars out of seven. The food was all excellent, the patio seating is nice, service was fine, and pricing was reasonable ? for seven different dishes and a drink, the bill was about $80. Of course, you don?t have to eat seven things, but it all sounds good, so you may have a hard time narrowing it down?
