President Obama's remarks in Colorado Springs on Waldo Canyon Fire

Here is the text of the remarks President Barack Obama made June 29 at Fire Station No. 2 in Colorado Springs after touring the area of the Waldo Canyon Fire, as released by the White House.

THE PRESIDENT: Well, we just had a chance to tour some of the damage that's been done by this devastating fire. I've had a chance to thank Mayor Bach as well as Governor Hickenlooper. And the entire congressional delegation, members of the fire service, the Forest Service, as well as local fire officials have gotten a full briefing.

I think what you see here is an example of outstanding

coordination and cooperation between federal, state and local agencies. We have been putting everything we have into trying to deal with what's one of the worst fires that we've seen here in Colorado. And it's still early in the fire season, and we still got a lot more work to do. But because of the outstanding work that's been done, because of not only the coordination but also some unprecedented arrangements that have been made with military resources combined with the civil resources, we're starting to see progress.

Obviously, as you saw in the some of these subdivisions, the devastation is enormous. And our thoughts and prayers go out to all the families who have been affected.

One of the things that I've tried to emphasize is that whether it's fires in Colorado or flooding in the northern parts of Florida, when natural disasters like this hit, America comes together. And we all recognize that there but for the grace of God, go I. We've got to make sure that we have each other's backs. And that spirit is what you're seeing in terms of volunteers, in terms of firefighters, in terms of government officials. Everybody is pulling together to try to deal with this situation.

Now, as I said, we're not completely out of the woods yet. These folks, some of them have been working 18-hour days, 20-hour days, trying to make sure that these fires get put out. They're going to be carefully monitoring the situation, and ultimately they're going to need a little bit of help from Mother Nature in order to fully extinguish these fires.

In the meantime, some lessons are being learned about how we can mitigate some of these fires in the future, and I know that the Mayor and Governor, and other local officials are already in those conversations. It means that hopefully, out of this tragedy, some long-term planning occurs, and it may be that we can curb some of the damage that happens the next time, even though you obviously can't fully control fires that are starting up in these mountains.

Last point I just want to make -- and that is that we can provide all the resources, we can make sure that they're well-coordinated, but as I just told these firefighters, what we can do is to provide them with the courage and the determination and the professionalism, the heart that they show when they're out there battling these fires.

When we had a chance on site to see some guys who had just saved three homes in a community that had been devastated, for those families, the work and the sacrifice of those firefighters means the world to them, and they are genuine heroes.

And so we want to just say thank you to all the folks who have been involved in this. We're proud of you. We appreciate what you do each and every day. And so for folks all around the country, I hope you are reminded of how important our fire departments are, our Forest Service is. Sometimes they don't get the credit that they deserve until your house is burning down, or your community is being threatened. And you have to understand they're putting their lives at risk to save us and to help us. We've got to make sure that we remember that 365 days a year, not just when tragedies like this strike.

Thank you very much, everybody.

Scientists See Star Blasting a Planet for the First Time Ever [Video]

Imagine you're outside, walking happily on a beautiful sunny day. Suddenly, the light gets intense. You look up, and see a bright flash filling everything. Seconds later, a powerful wind starts pushing the clouds out of view at hypersonic speed. Buildings, trees, and people fly away, disintegrating into a billion pieces. Everything around you disappears and the sky is no longer blue, because the atmosphere has been blown away like a candle. More »

Rights group says Apple suppliers in China breaking labor laws

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Apple Inc's suppliers in China have violated local labor laws when they imposed excessive overtime and skimped on insurance, a New York-based labor rights group said.

Apple and its suppliers such as Taiwanese tycoon Terry Gou's Foxconn Technology Group have been the target of labor rights groups, which say the world's most valuable technology company are making iPhones and iPads in massive sweat shops.

"From our investigations we found that the labor rights violations at Foxconn also exist in virtually all other Apple supplier factories, and in many cases, are actually significantly more dire than at Foxconn," China Labor Watch said in a 133-page report released on Thursday.

A four-month investigation through April showed workers work up to 180 hours of overtime a month during peak periods, exceeding the legal limit of 36 hours per month, the group said, citing Riteng, a unit of Taiwan's Pegatron Corp, as an example.

Some factories also omit medical insurance as required by the law while workers are exposed to hazardous conditions, according to the report.

China Labor Watch interviewed 620 workers at 10 factories run by Apple suppliers, including Toyo Precision Appliance and BYD Electronic (International) Co.

The group also spoke with workers at factories run by units of Quanta Computer Inc, Wintek Corp and U.S.-listed Jabil Circuit Inc.

The companies couldn't be immediately reached for comment.

"As part of our ongoing supplier responsibility program, our team has conducted thorough audits at every facility in China Labor Watch's report," Kristin Huguet, an Apple spokeswoman based in Cupertino, California, said in an e-mail.

"In some places, our auditors found issues similar to those described by China Labor Watch, including overtime violations," she said, when asked to comment on the report.

DISMAL CONDITIONS

The report singled out Riteng for dismal work conditions, saying workers work almost 12 hours a day, longer than 10 hours a day at Foxconn, Apple's main supplier.

Half of Riteng's workers described safety conditions as "bad," more than Foxconn's 2 percent, according to the report.

The average hourly wage at Riteng is 8.2 yuan ($1.29), well below the average rate 10.2 yuan at Foxconn.

The Pegatron unit was not immediately available for comment.

Labor groups say wages have generally been on the rise, though the growth has been slower than inflation.

"Wages are certainly going up, but they are still a very long way from what you consider a decent wage because inflation in the major cities in southern China is going up all the time," said Geoffrey Crothall of China Labor Bulletin.

"It's generally better at the larger factories, but the problem with Foxconn and a lot of the other Taiwanese, Hong Kong-owned manufacturers, the management culture there is still very authoritarian, quite dictatorial. People say it's quasi-military."

James Wu, a spokesman for Catcher Technology Co, which was also mentioned in the report, said the proportion of short-term labor it employs without having to provide severance compensation was actually lower than that described by China Labor Watch.

"Our dispatch rate is 20-30 percent, lower than the rate of around 80 percent mentioned in the report," Wu said.

Catcher also put their workers through a three-day training program to prepare them for their jobs.

"In summary, our company provides benefits for workers that exceed basic requirements," Wu said.

MAKING CHECKS

Apple said it had been making checks at its supply chain partners and regularly publishes reports on workers' situation on its website (http://www.apple.com/supplierresponsibility/).

The company, which monitors worker hours of more than 700,000 workers in its supply chain, said it had been following up to make sure suppliers comply with its labor standards.

Workers typically have little legal representation in China, where labor laws are sometimes not strictly enforced. Unions are also often not effective in providing feedback to management, labor rights groups said.

Following a spate of critical reports detailing unsafe factory practices at Foxconn plants that triggered worker deaths and suicides, Apple this year allowed the U.S.-based Fair Labor Association (FLA) to conduct a high-profile probe of Foxconn's factories in China.

"The process of change in our company continues, and competitive wages, improved living conditions and the abolition of the use of dispatched workers by our company are some examples of this," Foxconn said in an e-mailed statement.

"Our considerable investment in this process will change our industry through the positive example we are setting for other companies." ($1 = 6.3554 Chinese yuan)

MNA Daily NewsScan, June 26, 2012: Twin Cities #1 in fitness; rural ...

26 Jun

HEALTH CARE

Twin Cities?Ranks #1 in Fitness?? High rates of physical activity helped to propel Minneapolis-St. Paul to the top of the list of the American College of Sports Medicine?s 2012 American Fitness Index (AFI) for the second year in a row, while raised obesity levels and smoking pushed Oklahoma City to the bottom.

Change is Coming to Rural Health Care, Whatever the Supreme Court Decides??Even if the Supreme Court rules some part of the law unconstitutional, he said, ?I don?t think it will derail the move forward toward change. It?s not prudent for health organizations to sit back and wait. Reform will continue to move and evolve. The push toward more integrated models will continue to occur. The notion that individual hospitals [and other providers] will exist as islands is probably not realistic.?

NURSING

Communicating with Patients is Fundamental to Culturally Competent Care?? Recent statistics show the U.S. is more diverse than ever before. Richard's Real Estate and Urban Economics Blog: Laurence Ball ...

All of this is particularly discouraging given that Bernanke's own magnificent scholarly work calls for the Fed to be more aggressive at the zero-bound, if necessary. ?Lawrence Ball perhaps has some insights into what is going on:
"There is no doubt that Ben Bernanke's views on zero-bound policy have changed over time. ?Once, he called for targets for long-term interest rates a "policy I personally prefer"; later, he "agreed 100%" with opposition to that policy. ?Bernanke once advocated a 3-4% inflation target for Japan; as Fed chair, he says "that's not a direction we're interested in pursuing."...he no longer argues that a central bank can easily overcome the zero-bound problem "if the will to do so exists."?
At one level, the primary reason for these changes is also clear: Bernanke was influenced by the work of the Fed staff...?
...The puzzle about this history is why Bernanke so quickly and completely dropped his previous views and adopted those of Fed Staff. ?We cannot be sure, but social psychology suggests two possible factors: groupthink and Bernanke's shy personality."
I am a big fan of Bernanke's scholarly work, and as a result was thrilled when he was appointed Fed Chair. ?My understanding, however, is that he hasn't a whiff of arrogance about him, a characteristic that makes him a wonderful scholar and, from all I can tell, a wonderful human being. ?But Chairman Bernanke really is the smartest guy in the room, and it would be nice if he remembered that. If the views he (along with Mark Gertler) developed over many years informed monetary policy, we would all be better off.

Turkey jet crisis unlikely to pull NATO into Syria

(AP) ? Syria's downing of a Turkish military jet has the feel of a turning point that could drag Western powers into a conflict that is spiraling out of control.

Turkey said Monday it would push NATO to consider Syria's downing of the RF-4E reconnaissance jet as an attack on the whole military alliance, and added that Syria also had shot at a Turkish search-and-rescue plane shortly after the jet was downed Friday. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has vowed to hold Syria to account, while Britain's foreign minister said Damascus won't be allowed to act with impunity.

But for all the hard talk, the prospect of Western military intervention in Syria remains remote, at best.

For one thing, military action is unlikely to get the support of either the U.N. Security Council or the Arab League, and outside intervention without the blessing of both of those bodies is all but unthinkable. And there is little appetite among the 28 NATO countries ? of which the U.S. is the largest ? for another war in the Middle East.

Libya was hard enough, and for a many nervous months it looked as if that conflict might end in an embarrassing stalemate for the West. And Syria would be tougher than Libya. Syrian President Bashar Assad's army is better equipped, better trained, better paid and far more loyal than was that of late Libyan leader Moammar Gaddhafi.

So for the moment, despite the increasing violence and the staggering number of deaths, action by the international community seems to be limited to sanctions and strong words.

And so it was on Monday, when foreign ministers from the 27 European Union countries condemned Syria's downing Friday of a Turkish jet, but said the bloc would not support military action in the troubled country.

"What happened is to be considered very seriously," said Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal. Having gotten his denunciation out of the way, he let the other shoe drop: "We do not go for any interventions."

Turkish officials have acknowledged that the jet mistakenly strayed into Syrian airspace, but was warned to leave by Turkish authorities and was a mile (1.6 kilometers) inside international airspace when Syria shot it down. The Turkish pilots are still missing.

Turkey initially called a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, NATO's governing body, on Tuesday to discuss the incident under Article 4 of NATO's founding treaty, which allows a NATO ally to request such a consultation if it feels its territorial integrity or security has been threatened.

Late on Monday, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said Ankara "has made necessary applications regarding Article 4 and Article 5." Article 5 states that an attack against one NATO member shall be considered an attack against all members.

Arinc also said for the first time that Syrian forces opened ground fire on a CASA search and rescue plane shortly after the downing, but did not say if that plane was hit.

An alliance diplomat said ambassadors will discuss Turkey's concerns ? and would likely condemn the downing.

"But there won't be anything more specific than that," said the diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of standing rules.

Turkey has been one of the fiercest critics of Assad's crackdown. But until now, it has had no wish to inflame already-heightened tensions.

A Turkish government official said the government was trying to ratchet up diplomatic pressure on Syria, where activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed in the 15-month uprising. He said the country was still working out what steps to take ? though they would not include military intervention.

"We are not talking about war, but we will keep the pressure on Syria and give it no chance to catch its breath," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government rules.

Mustafa Kibaroglu, a professor of international relations at Istanbul's Okan University, said that by calling Tuesday's emergency meeting, Turkey was trying to show Syria that it has the full support of NATO and the European Union.

But he dismissed the possibility the alliance would activate Article 5, despite Turkey's requests.

"Unless there is another ... act of provocation (from Syria), there will be no activation of Article 5," Kibaroglu said.

Syria has said it was unaware that the F-4 Phantom jet belonged to Turkey, and that it was protecting its air space against an unknown intruder. In the past, Israeli warplanes have penetrated Syrian airspace by flying over the Mediterranean coastline.

Syrian foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said the downing was an accident, caused by the "automatic response" of an officer commanding an anti-aircraft gun. The man saw a jet coming at him at high speed and low altitide and opened fire, Makdissi said.

Analysts said that, although the latest incident will likely be contained, the conflict in Syria is now threatening to draw in other nations.

"Syria's apology will probably quell the immediate outrage," said Barak Seener, a Middle East expert at the Royal United Services Institute, a British military think tank.

"But it's increasingly clear that as the conflict escalates there will be a spillover effect with regional consequences," he said. "While NATO will not get involved yet, this illustrates that international actors will increasingly be sucked into the conflict."

Still, there is a sense of war-weariness in NATO, an aversion to any more involvement in the Middle East after last year's conflict over Libya.

The alliance's primary focus remains the costly war in Afghanistan, where it still has about 130,000 troops, a decade after the ouster of the Taliban regime. Although NATO forces enjoy overwhelming superiority in numbers, firepower and mobility, the guerrillas are showing no sign of giving up.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has repeatedly said that the alliance would need a clear international mandate, and regional support, before it embarked on a mission in Syria.

Last year, NATO launched air attacks on Libyan government targets only after receiving a mandate from the U.N. Security Council, along with backing from the Arab League.

But in Syria's case, the Arab League hasn't been able to agree on the need for military intervention. Even Syria's different opposition groups are riven by divisions over whether outside military intervention would help or hurt. Some in the Syrian opposition argue that it would reduce their country to rubble, leaving them nothing on which to build a new future once Assad was gone.

And Russia and China ? both veto-wielding members of the Security Council ? have consistently shielded Assad's regime from international sanctions over its violent crackdown on protests. Russia also has continued to provide Syria with arms, despite Western calls for a halt in supplies.

Diplomats from Russia and China in the past have called on all sides to refrain from provocative actions that could escalate the conflict. This would likely include reconnaissance flights over the Syrian coastline.

Last week, President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the Syrian crisis on the sidelines of a Group of 20 economic conference in Mexico.

The meeting ended without apparent agreement on how to end the violence.

Wake up America: Germany Finance Minister To Obama: Quit Giving ...

By Susan Duclos

It takes quite a bit of arrogance for Barack Obama to attempt to give deficit advice to other countries when he is presiding over America's highest deficit under his term in office than at any other time.? Germany's finance Minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, is calling Obama out on that arrogance.

Via AP:

Germany's finance minister is rejecting U.S. President Barack Obama's calls on Europe to move faster in fighting its debt crisis, telling him to get the American deficit under control instead.

Wolfgang Schaeuble told public broadcaster ZDF in an interview late Sunday that "people are always very quick at giving others advice."

He says: "Mr. Obama should first of all take care of reducing the American deficit, which is higher than in the eurozone."

About time another country publicly tells Obama to stop giving them advice to follow him over the debt cliff by pushing for policies that have failed to bring America's deficit under control and has made it worse.

Crime ? Japan to make illegal downloading of music, videos punishable with jail terms

TOKYO ?

The government has passed a new amendment to its copyright laws, making illegal downloading punishable with jail terms for the first time.

The new law applies to those found in possession of pirated material such as music, DVDs or Blu-ray discs, and could result in fines of up to 2 million yen and sentences of up to two years in prison, according to CNET Japan.

The changes to the law bring Japan in line with the U.S., where downloading is already a criminal offense and punishments are even more severe. U.S. criminal penalties can run up to 5 years in prison or a $250,000 fine, 10 times higher than Japan.

The move has been welcomed by music industry figures, but has caused some concern among legal experts, NTV reported. The government claims the move has been introduced to protect people making music. Warner Music Japan CEO Keiichi Ishizaka has been quoted in the press as saying that he would like to see all illegal downloading eradicated.

The new amendment makes illegal downloading truly punishable for the first time. The downloading of copyrighted material without permission has been illegal in Japan since 2009, but as a civil matter, rather than a criminal one. As a result, punishments were restricted to those who uploaded pirated content. Uploaders were liable to face penalties of up to 10 years in prison or fines of as much as 10 million yen.

The bill passed the Lower House last Wednesday with little opposition, and passed the Upper House by a vote of 221 to 12, NTV reported. One of the few opponents of the bill, Takeshi Miyamoto, suggested although illegal downloading was a problem, a more effective approach to eradicating the practice would be to establish systems to efficiently remove illegal content, rather than to focus on punishment.

Meanwhile, NHK reports that some legal experts have expressed concern that the bill?s unclear wording could lead to unfair and unnecessary prosecutions. The bill says that a person who is aware that the the download or stream results in a copyright infringement can face charges. As a result, even watching a YouTube video could result in prosecution if the viewer is aware that streaming the media is illegal.

Some groups, including the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, have suggested that this may be an excessive measure in a country that still relies on the sales and rentals of physical media and has seen a relatively slow uptake of legal download services.

Upper House member Yuko Mori, another opponent of the amendment, was widely quoted in the Japanese press as saying, ?We shouldn?t risk making the general public, including young people, the subject of criminal investigations.?

The Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) said it believes the amendments are good for the industry, and that it will strive to make the public aware of the new rules and penalties, the Nikkei reported. RIAJ chairman and CEO of Sony Music Entertainment Japan Naoki Kitagawa claimed the changes would ?reduce the spread of copyright infringement activities on the Internet.?

The new law will come into effect in October.

Judge blocks Apple in Google smartphone war

Sat Jun 23, 2012 12:36am EDT

(Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Friday ruled that Apple Inc cannot pursue an injunction against Google's Motorola Mobility unit, effectively ending a key case for the iPhone maker in the smartphone patent wars.

The ruling came from Judge Richard Posner in Chicago federal court. He dismissed the litigation between Apple and Motorola Mobility with prejudice, meaning it can't be refiled.

The ruling is a blow for Apple, which had hoped a decisive ruling against Motorola would help it gain an upper hand in the smartphone market against Android.

"Apple is complaining that Motorola's phones as a whole ripped off the iPhone as a whole," Posner wrote. "But Motorola's desire to sell products that compete with the iPhone is a separate harm -? and a perfectly legal one -? from any harm caused by patent infringement."

Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet declined to comment on the ruling. Motorola Mobility spokeswoman Jennifer Erickson said the company was pleased that Posner dismissed Apple's case.

Both parties have the option to appeal Posner's ruling.

Motorola sued Apple in October 2010, a move that was widely seen as a pre-emptive strike against an imminent Apple lawsuit. Apple filed its own claims against Motorola the same month.

Posner issued a series of pre-trial rulings that eliminated nearly all of Motorola's patent claims against Apple from the prospective trial, while maintaining more of Apple's claims against Motorola. That meant Apple had more to gain in the trial, which had been set to start last week.

However, Posner canceled the trial earlier this month.

Apple had sought an injunction barring the sale of Motorola products using Apple's patented technology. But in Friday's ruling, Posner wrote that neither party is entitled to an injunction.

Since Motorola could design around the minor technological features covered by Apple's patents, an injunction would be an inappropriate windfall for Apple, Posner wrote.

Posner also said that Apple had not clearly demonstrated that Motorola phones caused a loss of consumer goodwill significant enough for an injunction.

"To suggest that it has suffered loss of market share, brand recognition, or customer goodwill as a result of Motorola's alleged infringement of the patent claims still in play in this case is wild conjecture," Posner wrote.

In a bright spot for the iPhone maker, Posner also ruled that Motorola could not seek an injunction based on the one patent in the case that it was still asserting against Apple.

Motorola had pledged to license that patent - which covers an aspect of wireless communication - on fair and reasonable terms to other companies in exchange for having the technology adopted as an industry standard.

"How could it be permitted to enjoin Apple from using an invention that it contends Apple must use if it wants to make a cell phone," Posner wrote.

At a hearing earlier this week, Apple had argued that it would be satisfied with an injunction forcing Motorola to remove Apple's patented features within three months. But Posner found that proposal unworkable, in part because of the hardship in administering such an order.

"Because of the potential costs to Motorola and the federal judiciary I could not responsibly order injunctive relief in favor of Apple," he wrote in his ruling.

The case is Apple Inc. and NeXT Software Inc. V. Motorola Inc. and Motorola Mobility Inc., in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, no. 11-08540.

Militia semipro football team hungry for title after last season's disappointment

Their regular-season opener was still more than a month away as the Western Connecticut Militia semipro football team toiled away at its training camp session last Thursday at the Newtown Youth Academy.

Nonetheless, there was a sense of urgency surrounding the team, coupled with the understanding that championships that are celebrated on crisp autumn afternoons are paid for in sweat and blood during the preseason.

And after losing the New England Football League's Double-A championship game to the New Hampshire Wolfpack on a last-minute field goal -- after leading 17-3 midway through the third quarter -- the Militia is a team on a mission, plain and simple. They had a taste of success last year in their inaugural season, and they're hungry for more.

"Nobody forgot," said quarterback Kevin Oberg of New Milford. "It's still there, like it happened yesterday. Unfinished business. That's stuck in everybody's head."

It was a tough way to end what had been such a triumphant season for the Militia. They went 9-1 in the regular season, out-scoring their opponents 245-54 and recording seven shutouts. The Militia then beat the Southern New England Rage 16-6 to win the NEFL's Southern Division title and advance to the league championship game.

"We felt like we had a dream season, and it was tough to lose that game, especially when we felt like we were the better team that day," said wide receiver Ryan Mack of Danbury. "We just made mental mistakes and let ourselves down. That definitely gives us fuel for this year. We're ready to get it done this year."

Given the circumstances of that championship-game loss, it was a particularly bitter off-season for the Militia. But it was a productive off-season, too. The Militia moved up to the Triple-A division, which features the best teams in the NEFL. The Militia agreed to a two-year contract extension with Immaculate High School in Danbury, where the Militia will continue to play its home games through 2013. And, perhaps most importantly, head coach Lonnie Young agreed to a two-year contract extension.

"Last season ended on a sour note, however, it is something to build off of," Young said. "Our goal is to get back to the championship game and finish even though we moved up to a higher level."

In order to do so, the Militia signed some important new players who, along with a strong core of returning players, will look to lead the Militia back to the title game.

"We have a huge amount of talent, and we have to find a place for it," Militia co-owner Lloyd Dotson said. "In some situations, we have multiple players who are used to being No. 1, and they have the stats to prove it. That's what the coaches are trying to figure out -- how do we get all these athletes on the field at the same time."

And the jump to Triple-A certainly adds to the challenge.

"Conditioning is going to be No. 1 going into Triple-A," said offensive lineman Mike Swartz. "There is a lot more talent, a lot more speed, size, strength, everything. And the way we didn't finish last year is making us want to do even more this year to get ready."

Oberg is back as the Militia's starting quarterback again this season after earning the NEFL's Double-A Offensive MVP last season and playing in the NEFL Double-A All-Star Game. The former New Milford High and Nichols College standout threw for 1,892 yards and ran for 856 more.

Oberg's favorite target, Mack, is also back. He was the Offensive MVP in the Double-A All-Star Game last year. He will be joined by former Sacred Heart University star wideout Garry Coles. The Kent School product caught 114 passes for 1,260 yards and 13 TDs at SHU. Also keep an eye on wideouts Tyrone Breece of Danbury and Jason Davis.

At running back, watch for former Western Connecticut State University standout Lionel Assie. The 2010 WCSU graduate led the Colonials with 377 yards rushing and five touchdowns his senior year.

"My main goal here is to just come in and help wherever I can, run hard and put some points on the board," said Assie. "We have a strong sense of togetherness. There's a team unity. We're in this together and we're in this all the way."

And of course, none of those guys can do anything without the support of a solid offensive line, and the Militia has one of those, led by Swartz and SHU's Justin Smith -- who both earned All-NEFL honors last season -- and by newcomer Brian Ostaszewski of UMass.

A hard-hitting, ball-hawking defense was the Militia's calling card last season, and that will most likely hold true again this season. Leading the way once again will be defensive end Chansler Davis. The former SHU star was named the NEFL's Double-A Defensive MVP last year after registering 13 1/2 sacks and 26 tackles for a loss despite being constantly double-teamed.

Davis will be joined on defense by returning standouts like linemen Shaun Kellman and Mike Palmer, linebackers Desmond Miller and Rich Zuleg and defensive backs Dan Faison and Raquim Taft of Danbury. Faison, a former standout at Marist, along with Taft, Kellman, Palmer and Miller were All-NEFL selections last year.

The sure-footed Tyler Kurjiaka of Danbury, another All-NEFL pick last year, is back to do the kicking once again.

Fans can catch a glimpse of this year's team on Saturday when the Militia hosts the New York Red Rebels, a powerhouse in the Five Star Football League, in a preseason game at Rogers Park at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free. The Militia will play the Brooklyn Bobcats in another preseason game at Rogers Park on June 30 at 1:30 p.m.

Jobs will be at stake in these preseason games, as the Militia still have several cuts to make. The Militia will open the regular season against the Hartford Whalers on July 22 at 1:30 p.m. at Immaculate High.

The Militia will look to carry last year's success -- both on the field and in the community -- into this season and continue to build upon it. Without ever having played a regular-season game, the Militia drew 700 fans to their inaugural game.

"The city has been great to us," Militia co-owner Carl Oberg said. "The more we get out there, the more support we're getting."

Fans can check out the Militia online at WesternCTMilitia.com.

Bloomberg: Microsoft Surface Will Be WiFi Only [Rumors]

Microsoft's new Surface tablet looks like it could give the iPad stiff competition—but according to Bloomberg it won't be matching Apple's offering on every front. Their sources suggest that, initially at least, the Surface will only feature WiFi, and no option for a mobile data connection. More »

Griffin StudioConnect for iPad

If you're an iPad musician, the Griffin StudioConnect ($149.99 direct) could be your salvation. The StudioConnect ?lets you connect your electric guitar, bass guitar, or MIDI keyboard to your iPad. It looks sharp, and puts your iPad front and center as the centerpiece of a music studio. But considering its price, and the lack of an easy way to record vocals, it's tough to see a large market for the StudioConnect.

Design, Headphone Jack, and MIDI Ports
Griffin designed the StudioConnect well. It has some weight to it, and the bottom panel features a pair of oversized, non-skid rubber feet. The dock insert is also covered in rubber. Put the StudioConnect on your desk, dock the iPad, and it's not going anywhere. The built-in dock connector is black, and runs on a short, one-foot gray wire that you can tuck neatly behind the iPad while it's docked. Plug the included AC adapter into the wall, and a blue ring lights up around the oversized chrome volume knob.

The front-mounted, standard-size 3.5mm headphone jack is convenient, but seems redundant at first glance?why not just use the one on the iPad? Use the one on the StudioConnect, though, and you can leave the headphones attached to the dock, which means one less thing to connect and disconnect whenever you move the iPad. You also get to control volume with the massive chrome knob, which is much easier than using the iPad's fiddly volume controls (which reverse orientation in landscape mode). Finally, you can switch between audio coming out of the main speakers and through the headphones at will.

The MIDI In and Out ports mean you can position the iPad to the left or right of a much larger controller keyboard, and then use the iPad as your recording device. The same problem that plagued the IK Multimedia iRig MIDI ($69.99, 3.5 stars) also affects the StudioConnect: By using MIDI ports, your MIDI controller needs an AC power adapter. Most of today's budget-priced MIDI keyboards don't come with one, as they run off of USB power, and many don't even have a DC port at all, so you can't even buy one at, say, RadioShack. Just keep that in mind when planning your setup; you're probably going to need multiple pieces (including the StudioConnect, if you go this route) no matter what.Griffin StudioConnect

Audio Recording and Conclusions
The StudioConnect does its job well, with clean audio quality and transparent operation throughout. I tested it with Apple GarageBand 1.2 ($4.99, 4 stars), BeepStreet Sunrizer ($4.99, 4.5 stars) and Moog Music Animoog ($29.99, 4 stars). The MIDI ports worked fine with an M-Audio KeyStation 49i MIDI keyboard, which I powered with the appropriate AC adapter. Unfortunately, the lack of an XLR jack with phantom power gets in the way. While you can technically buy a quarter-inch-to-XLR adapter for a microphone, that won't sound quite as good, and only works for unpowered dynamic mics like the Shure SM57 anyway. (This is what you had to do with inexpensive four-track tape recorders 20 years ago.)

A better option would be to use an inexpensive, external stereo mixer from Behringer, Samson, or a low-end Mackie, plug all of your mics into that, turn on phantom power, and then run the outputs of the mixer into the stereo 3.5mm input on the back of the StudioConnect. That will at least get you better quality recordings of vocals and other instruments through GarageBand, Blip Interactive NanoStudio ($19.99, 3.5 stars), or any other app that supports digital audio tracks or sampling.

So the Griffin StudioConnect is expensive, and doesn't do everything I'd like to see it do. It's not a bad product, but I can't help but be disappointed by the lack of a mic preamp, XLR input, and phantom power. Virtually every PC and Mac audio interface these days, no matter how inexpensive, has at least one mic preamp. Other options: The Alesis iO Dock ($399, 4 stars) costs considerably more, but adds these features and many others; it's still the best iPad recording interface out there, although it's far from perfect. The IK Multimedia iRig MIDI is a good way to save money if you just want to hook up a MIDI controller to your iPad, and don't need the StudioConnect's charging features, stereo outputs, or extra headphone jack, but the StudioConnect is a much neater solution as a result of those features. Finally, the Samson Carbon 49 ($89, 3.5 stars) is a good choice if you don't have a MIDI controller at all; just be sure to buy the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit ($29) along with it, as the Carbon 49 ?has no dock connector of its own.

'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' Cast Share Slo-Mo Acting Tips

'Be willing to look stupid,' Anthony Mackie, who plays Lincoln's best friend in the film, warns.

Working with a director like Timur Bekmambetov guarantees a few things. You'll probably take part in some insane action sequences. And there will definitely be slow-motion.

When MTV News sat down with Benjamin Walker and Anthony Mackie, from Bekmambetov's latest film, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," they shared some helpful hints about how to properly act in super-slo-mo.

"Don't think about it," Walker said right off the bat. He probably had the most to do at the slow speed as our 16th president and first commander in vampire slaying, Abraham Lincoln.

But it's never that simple, as Mackie was able to attest. "Be willing to look stupid," he warned.

The final sequence of the film finds Abe and his best friend, Will Johnson (Mackie), atop a locomotive, riding along a burning bridge. It required a lot of slow-motion running and jumping. Mackie couldn't help but exaggerate his movement as he leapt from car to car.

"There's that whole sequence where we're jumping from one car to the other when the bridge is burning up, and I literally couldn't stop doing the 'swim' move when I was jumping. So Timur was like, 'Don't do the swim move,' and I was like, 'Sh--,' " he said. "So we're on the train, and he's like, 'Don't think about it,' and I'm like, 'All right, all right, all right.' Action, jump, swim. In order not to do the swim move, I do a shot-put move. Needless to say, I'm glad it looked all right in the movie, because I thought I was going to look like an idiot."

Similarly, during something as simple as a ballroom-dancing scene, Walker couldn't help act out the slo-mo. "When we were shooting the ballroom scene, it was in slow motion," he said. "I knew it in my mind, so I start kind of slowing down. He goes, 'No, stop. We'll slow it down later.' "

But if it came down to it, Mackie had one big piece of advice. "It's all about your face," he said. "They always say, 'Be careful about your face.' "
